Entertainers

What is Entertaining?

Entertaining is a form of troupe dancing, found in many parts of the north west of England and north Wales. Troupe dancing is traditionally associated with Carnival.  It is performed in public displays at carnivals, but nowadays is more usually done in competition.

The hallmark of the dancing (or at least the aspect which everyone seems to notice) is slapping of the thighs.  Each troupe has a number of teams according to age group.  At competitions the teams are judged on the quality of their performance.

Why photograph Entertainers?

I encountered Entertaining whilst photographing the crowning of the rose queen at a local school.  I was asked to photograph guests at the event, to add to the school photo album (as well as fundraising for the school). Among the guests there was a dance troupe.  They asked if I could do a fundraising project for them.......

As with any form of dance, Entertaining is very much a children’s activity, because dancers tend to start young. Where it is done, it is part of local tradition, unsung and largely unknown outside carnival circles and the people that do it.  However, it adds tremendous value to the development of many children, and all this is achieved by volunteers with seemingly endless energy and patience.  So I support the activity, because I think it deserves support.
